Values in the peace culture: Way to prevent school violence

Abstract

This research shows the contradictions that the culture of peace experiences in educational institutions in times characterized by violence. In order to achieve this goal, we seek to build a theory about the culture of peace based on the integration of values that promotes a path for the prevention of school violence. The methodological position of the present study was developed under the post-positivist paradigm, with a qualitative approach. The research method was phenomenological-hermeneutic. The key informants were 3 students, 3 teachers and 3 representatives for a total of 9. The data collection techniques were participant observation, in-depth interview, and the observation notebook and the generative questions were used as instruments. The information analysis techniques used were categorization, structuring, triangulation and contrasting. Among the findings are that the informants define school violence as conflictive situations of intolerance between groups of students who seek to impose their dominance over others, and when they feel attacked or vulnerable, they respond with violence. The reflection is that, in order to consolidate a culture of peace and school coexistence, the subject of values must be included in all learning areas, not only at a conceptual level, a typical error that is evident in current education, but also in the experience.
