Abstract

Business process management (BPM) has become a key strategic approach in organizational digital transformation, thanks to the integration of automated technologies aimed at optimizing operational efficiency and strengthening decision-making. In this context, this study aimed to examine the evidence on automation procedures in BPM and their influence on business process performance, efficiency, digitization, and process variability. A systematic review based on the PRISMA 2020 protocol was conducted, utilizing the Scopus, SciELO, and Dialnet databases. Fifteen studies were selected based on eligibility criteria. The analyzed evidence indicates that automation strengthens operational efficiency, reduces time and costs, improves activity traceability, and optimizes information management through technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotic process automation (RPA), and low-code tools. Furthermore, the evidence suggests that automation depends on the level of digital maturity, the complexity of the processes, and the available organizational capabilities, with greater benefits observed in structured and repetitive processes. It is concluded that automation is a strategic element for business modernization and adaptation, although its effectiveness depends on the proper integration of technology, organizational capabilities, and change management.
