A university student during his academic journey faces multiple pressures related to
content management, peer pressure, questions from professors, economic uncertainty,
adverse family situations, among other situations that put him on the limit, exponentially increasing his levels of anxiety, pushing him into the arms of stress that can unbalance his academic performance, feeling frustration at not achieving the academic goals he has set. Given this reality, the authors of this research set themselves the objective: to characterize assertive communication as a strategy in the face of academic stress in university students. Quantitative approach methodology with a comparative and retrospective descriptive design, using scientific articles between 2005 and 2021, in the Scopus and Scielo database, using as search words: assertiveness, assertive communication, academic stress and university student performance. Conclusions Assertive communication is seen as a personality characteristic that university students use to adequately manage academic stress, together with the support of a multidisciplinary university student orientation team.
