Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) is a global public health problem. It is a chronic degenerative disease with high morbidity and mortality, it is a representation of the magnitude of DM as an epidemiological phenomenon, if all diabetics diagnosed and treated in the world today were to come together within the same country, it would rank third in number of inhabitant Health promotion is important for individuals to develop skills focused on disease management, acceptance, diet change, and exercise, actions that have been shown to guarantee a better quality of life for people with diabetes. Objective: To analyze the determinants of type 2 diabetes mellitus and self-care in older adults and its complications. Material and Methods: This research is quantitative, the design and type of study will be descriptive, cross-sectional, conducting a review of the current state of the subject in electronic databases in the last 5 years in documents, books, electronic journals, indexed journals. A review of articles in databases such as Pubmed, Scielo, Latindex, Redalyc was made. Conclusion: It is essential that continuous educational activities for people with diabetes can increase their knowledge about the disease and nutrition, which reflects good behavior in daily metabolic control.
