Abstract

Introduction: Population aging presents new challenges for maintaining autonomy and functionality in older adults. In this context, information and communication technologies (ICT) emerge as key tools to support performance in activities of daily living (ADLs). Objective: To analyze the available scientific evidence on access to and use of ICT as a tool to improve performance in ADLs among older adults, through a systematic literature review. Materials and methods: The PRISMA guideline was applied, and 14 studies published between 2020 and 2024 were selected from PubMed, Wiley Online Library, The Lancet, and Nature Archive. The review included studies that addressed the impact of ICT on autonomy, functionality, and quality of life in older adults. Results: The use of ICT significantly improves personal autonomy, functionality in managing daily activities, and perceived quality of life, especially among individuals with digital experience, higher educational levels, and social support. However, disparities related to age, gender, and socioeconomic status persist, limiting access and benefits for certain groups. Conclusions: ICT has a positive and potentially transformative impact on the lives of older adults, although its effectiveness depends on individual and contextual factors. Promoting equitable access and digital skills is essential to maximize these benefits and reduce technological gaps in aging.
