Abstract

Introduction: Sedentary behaviors are those that require very little energy expenditure, these include behaviors such as sitting or lying down (but not standing) and occur in work areas (paid or not), travel and leisure time. Objective: To determine the causes and
consequences of sedentary lifestyle. Materials and methods: The inductive-deductive method had used as a research method, with a nonexperimental design, being cross-sectional. This study had accomplished at the State University of Milagro in the Health Sciences Faculty of undergraduate degree in nursing, being the population under study, the nursing students of this university. The information
collection period was between October 2017 and February 2018. Results: The 71, 4% of respondents’ defined sedentary lifestyle as lack of exercise and 36% of those consulted say they do physical activity twice a week, which is favorable. Conclusions: Sedentary people are
more likely to have long-term illnesses such as obesity and cardiovascular disease and a large percentage of respondents never do physical
activity.
