Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus, like most chronic non-communicable diseases,
constitutes a major public health problem worldwide, where incidence rates exceed 1.2%
of the adult population annually. Objective: Describe the theoretical approach of
diabetes. Materials and Methods: It is a descriptive monographic study. Where different
articles in databases such as Scielo, Pubmed and Scopus are analyzed with keywords such
as Diabetes Mellitus, type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Results: Diabetes does not allow the
body to produce a sufficient amount of insulin or the cells stop respond to insulin, so that
blood glucose levels rise, this can trigger serious health situations over time, such as heart
disease, vision loss, kidney disease, among others. Conclusions: Diabetes Mellitus is a
chronic disease, product of a disorder in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and
proteins, characterized by increased blood glucose levels, or also called fasting
hyperglycemia, relative insulin deficiency, glycosuria. and with a tendency to develop
Atherosclerosis, Microangiopathies, Nephropathies and Neuropathies.
