Abstract

Inventory control is a key component in the management of microenterprises and community-based organizations, as it directly influences operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and responsiveness to changing environments. This review article aims to analyze the main models and practices of inventory control, with emphasis on their applicability in resource-limited organizations. The study draws on theoretical and empirical contributions from the specialized literature in administration, accounting, and operations management. The review highlights that traditional systems, such as Kardex and FIFO methods, remain relevant in contexts where automated platforms are not feasible, while the development of digital technologies and management software has opened new opportunities for control, traceability, and predictive analysis. Challenges were also identified, including resistance to change, staff training, and the initial investment required for process digitalization. It is concluded that combining traditional practices with accessible technological tools represents a strategic pathway to improve inventory management in microenterprises and social organizations, ensuring more efficient, transparent, and sustainable processes. This theoretical analysis provides a conceptual basis for future research and for the formulation of policies that foster the formalization and strengthening of small enterprises in Latin America.
