Clinical simulation with JUNO for adaptive competency assessment in technical nursing students: an educational innovation proposal

Abstract

Introduction: The assessment of clinical competencies in nursing requires strategies capable of evaluating knowledge, psychomotor skills, clinical judgment and decision-making under safe conditions close to real practice. Objective: To propose a model for integrating the JUNO clinical simulator as an adaptive and progressive assessment tool for clinical competencies in the comprehensive final examination of the Technical Nursing program. Materials and methods: An educational innovation proposal is presented as applied research and experimental development, with a mixed-methods approach and a one-group quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design for future institutional implementation. The unit of analysis will consist of 30 to 50 final-semester students selected through non-probability convenience sampling. The model includes four phases: acquisition, assimilation, transformation and exploitation. Clinical performance rubrics, checklists, simulator records, Likert-type surveys, semi-structured interviews and focus groups will be used. Results: The proposal presents an assessment model based on simulated clinical scenarios, faculty validation, evaluator training, implementation of the examination with JUNO, immediate feedback and systematization of performance evidence. The model is expected to contribute to assessment objectivity, clinical judgment, decision-making and institutional acceptance. Conclusions: The proposal offers a feasible alternative to modernize the comprehensive examination and strengthen competency-based assessment; its effectiveness must be verified through institutional validation, bias control, outcome monitoring and ethical review.
